Qualcomm Chip Closes in on Apple M3 Performance: Leaked Test

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite Arm chip has been making waves in the tech industry with leaked performance benchmarks showing a narrowing performance gap with Apple’s top-of-the-line M3 silicon. The Snapdragon X Elite 1800 showcased impressive single-core and multi-core scores, hinting at its potential to compete with Apple’s M3 chip.

The benchmarks, published on Windows Latest website, revealed that the Snapdragon X Elite had a single-core score of 2574 and a multi-core score of 12,562, while the M3 boasted a single-core score of 3181 and a multi-core score of 15,620. These scores highlight the X Elite’s capability to hold its own against Apple’s flagship chip.

Geekbench was used to generate these scores on a prototype device running early preview builds of Windows 11 version 24H2. It was noted that the chip’s performance may have been optimized for conditions like longer battery life or thermal throttling, which could have affected the benchmark results.

Anshel Sag, a senior analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, commented on Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU cores giving them a fighting chance to deliver competitive performance and battery life. He emphasized that this could help OEMs maintain competition with Apple’s MacBooks and prevent a loss of market share to Apple.

The Snapdragon X Elite’s benchmarks also send a strong message to PC shoppers, indicating that Arm processors for Windows PCs are no longer a compromise. Phil Solis, a research director at IDC, suggested that PC makers may offer more models with Arm processors, giving consumers more choice and potentially lower prices.

Mark N. Vena, president and principal analyst at SmartTech Research, predicted that the Snapdragon X Elite 1800 has the potential to disrupt the market by challenging traditional CPU dominance and encouraging innovation and competitive pricing. This could result in more choice, lower prices, and enhanced performance in laptops and PCs.

However, it’s important to approach these benchmarks with caution as the X Elite is still in its pre-production phase, and real-world performance may vary. Vena highlighted that benchmarks can be manipulated or optimized to showcase favorable results, and compatibility issues with existing software and hardware could affect performance in practical usage scenarios.

The X Elite’s integration of AI capabilities, particularly its dedicated NPU with 45 TOPS of performance, could make it a key component in AI PCs. Microsoft’s promotion of a new generation of AI PCs could benefit from the X Elite’s computational power, offering faster responses, improved multitasking, and tailored user experiences.

The question remains whether a competitive PC chip like the Snapdragon X Elite could pose a threat to Apple’s market share. Vena believes that a near-M3 PC laptop could potentially challenge Apple’s laptop market share, especially with comparable performance and potentially lower prices. However, factors like Apple’s loyal user base and ecosystem integration could mitigate this threat.

Overall, the Snapdragon X Elite Arm chip represents a significant advancement in the PC processor market, offering consumers more choice, competitive performance, and potential disruption to traditional CPU dominance. As the tech industry continues to evolve, competition between Qualcomm and Apple could drive innovation and benefit consumers with better computing experiences.
